WELCOME TO THE KAVANGO-ZAMBEZI
A shared vision
The Kavango Zambezi TFCA is enormous, larger than Germany and Austria combined and nearly twice as large as the United Kingdom. It lies in the Kavango and Zambezi river basins where Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe converge.
Kavango Zambezi- a shared vision
Imagine an African wilderness the size of France, where thousands of elephants tramp ancient migration trails unfettered by national boundaries. Picture vast horizons of forest, swamp, saltpan and savannah that teem with grazing herds and their attendant predators – and mighty rivers that snake across the land towards roaring cataracts, island labyrinths and desert sands. And imagine this wilderness populated by communities who live in harmony with it, knowing that their wellbeing depends upon preserving its natural riches.
There’s no need to imagine. This wilderness exists and its name is the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. If you don’t know the name, you will undoubtedly know many of its top drawcards: world-famous national parks such as Chobe, Moremi, Hwange and Kafue; jaw-dropping natural wonders such as the Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls. Together, these parks and wilderness areas, together with the contiguous parcels and corridors of protected land that connect and surround them, comprise a staggering 520,000 square kilometres. This makes Kavango Zambezi today the second largest conservation area in the world.
KAVANGO ZAMBEZI

So where exactly is Kavango Zambezi? Look at a map, and you will see that its fig leaf outline overlays the adjoining corners of five separate countries: Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Each is a committed partner in Kavango Zambezi’s shared mission. They know that wildlife conservation, and the responsible tourism it generates, is crucial for the development and well-being of local communities; that working co-operatively across natural boundaries to protect wildlife and natural resources will benefit the whole region. Together, they are pioneering a model that could one day benefit the whole of Africa.
When it comes to wildlife, Kavango Zambezi is hard to beat. In addition to Africa’s largest population of African elephant (approx. 250,000), the park supports significant numbers of many other large mammals, including buffalo, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, spotted hyena, zebra, giraffe and numerous antelope, plus internationally threatened species such as cheetah and African wild dog. The bird life is also prolific, with rarities such as wattled crane among over 600 species, while among 128 species of reptile is one of Africa’s largest remaining populations of Nile crocodile.
This natural diversity guarantees the visitor spectacular rewards. Whether enjoying the full ‘big five’ safari experience from the comfort of a luxury lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, bumping off the beaten track in the wilds of Zambia’s Sioma Ngwezi National Park or simply kicking back at the idyllic riverbank resorts of Victoria Falls to marvel at one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, Kavango Zambezi has every African adventure covered.
The Kavango Zambezi vision is ambitious: dealing with such a vast area brings major challenges, such as tackling poaching and reducing human-wildlife conflict. But leaders, community members, scientists and conservationists from all five member countries are today uniting to overcome these challenges; to protect wildlife, promote tourism and support the well-being of local communities. In the process they are creating the world’s greatest conservation project and, for the true lover of wildlife and wilderness, perhaps its most exciting visitor experience.

Dusty Road
Sarah Lilford founded Dusty Road, a Zimbabwean catering company, in 1998. From day one, it epitomised Sarah’s passion for fresh, seasonal food and her sunny, affable personality shone through as she produced a pantry range of pickles, preserves, jams, chutneys, oils, vinegars and confectionary. After having studied cookery overseas, Sarah travelled around the world and initially, her food reflected vastly different gastronomic influences: Asian, Mediterranean, south American and European, and she honed her skills working in bucket-list places: a ski resort in Switzerland, a yacht in the Mediterranean, Australian cattle stations and Kiwi farms, Scottish hunting lodges and African luxury tented camps. She blended those flavours with her own flair which stemmed from her upbringing on a Zimbabwean commercial farm, and revealed a unique take on food which proved vastly popular with those from all walks of life.
